Where Did Ranch Come From?
Now a beloved flavour all across Canada and the United States, ranch seasoning is believed to have originated on California ranches in the late 1950s. It was created by Steve Henson, a plumber from Nebraska, who came up with the original recipe for what we now know as ranch dressing. The dressing grew so popular that Henson and his wife Gayle turned it into a business: Hidden Valley Ranch. The dry seasoning mix—meant to be blended with mayonnaise and buttermilk—quickly gained traction across the country and remains a favourite today.
It’s also super easy to make at home. Here’s a simple recipe for homemade ranch seasoning mix:
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons dried parsley
- 2 teaspoons dried dill
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried chives
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
Just mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Once it’s ready, try using your homemade ranch seasoning in these fun ways:
Popcorn Seasoning: Sprinkle over fresh popcorn for a tangy twist! Works with or without butter.
Roasted Vegetables: Toss potatoes, carrots, or cauliflower with olive oil and ranch seasoning before roasting.
Ranch Potato Wedges: Coat potato wedges in olive oil and seasoning, then bake until crispy.
Ranch Dip: Combine seasoning with Greek yogurt or sour cream for a quick dip.
Ranch Burgers: Mix into ground beef before grilling, then top with ranch dressing.
Ranch Pasta Salad: Stir into cooked pasta with chopped veggies and chicken or bacon for a tasty salad.
